Blank screen for 1.5 minutes during boot-up. Any ideas why??

Windows XP (latest patches etc)
IBM ThinkPad T23 (640MB)

Hi

My Windows XP seems to get stuck during boot-up
and shows a blank blue screen for about 2 minutes
(with almost no disc access - nothing!) .

There is plenty of disk space, I have only quite recently
re-installed everything! I have run defrag and scandisk
quite recently too...

AND NOW it has developed a habit of hanging when
you ask it to close down! >:-[

Any ideas?

That indicates that you have some program/process running in the
background. Do the normal troubleshooting:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run the latest
CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html. Always
read the instructions before running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info - 5) look in
Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches and are running a firewall.

Just tried that
and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since

Looks too complicated for me!
I couldnt see what executable to download...
3) delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files;
Yes tried that
(Though not sure why that should make any difference)

4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and

Do I really need a firewall on my PC itself - the network has a firewall!
And it runs slowly enough (it's 2.5 years old) as it is!
