Blank Screen after login

After a SP 4 upgrade on a Windows 2000 server, when I
login I get a blue screen with just a mouse cursor. The
mouse responds, but nothing else. I have read several
articles about the profiles not loading or explorer.exe
needing to be started manually. Since CTL-ALT-DEL does
nothing, I have no way of doing this.

I changed the permissions, as recommended by microsoft on
the the root folder, this didn't help. I also tried to
uninstall SP4, also did not help. Next I tried to re-
install the SP and got an error on the install. However,
windows update does not show that I still need SP4.

I can boot to safe mode, and things work normally. I
tried reinstalling the display driver also.

The ironic thing is, the machine seems to be running
normally. I can get to it from a workstation and see
drive maps, and view the Event viewer and all seems normal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been
beating my head against the wall for about 7 hours now.

Thanks,
jd

Joe,

Is it a blank blue screen with a cursor in the left hand upper corner?

If so check your AV software. I had the same problem and the AV service was
hanging.

JD--

I'm having the identical problem. For me it happened when
loading the most recent security patches (9/10).

The server appears to boot but hangs as TrendMicro loads.
No icons appear on the desktop. CTL-ALT-DLT does not get
you to Task manager. I can access the drives from other
machines on the network as if the server is running. I can
also print on the server printer.

I'm booting to safe mode now but do not know what to do in
order to fix this error. Firgure I'll start with un-
installing the latest updates.

We loaded Service Pack 4 a few weeks ago. This problem
appears to be related to security patchs 824146 and 824105
which were loaded 9/10.

Help

I have tried all of the suggestions presented on the knowledgebase on
the Microsoft site. I just tried installing service pack 4 and the
problem has not been resolved. I checked the dates on the files that
was recommended for replacement. Since applying the service pack, it
shows new dates. Previously, it always showed the 1999 date from the
original installation.

Is this a dead end are there no answers?

I'm having the exact same problem after installing IE6 SP1
to a server that was installed with Win2K Server with SP4
from the start. I had recently installed 824146 and
824105. The server is also Trend Serverprotect client, as
another poster mentioned. It will not reboot when
choosing 'restart', just hangs incompletely shut down.
After power cycling and bringing the server back up, event
viewer from another system shows explorer.exe Dr. Watson
error. If I try to run task manager at the blank blue
screen, I get a task manager Dr. Watson error in the log.
Terminal services connection attempts log in to the same
blank blue screen. The server is working fine serving
DHCP, DNS, WINS and shares. All service set to Automatic
start up with no errors.
