Blank page

I create and maintain my own web page but can not get it to open in IE6 on
the computer from which I downloaded it. All I get is a blank page. The same
hapens in Netscape. The page is readable on the web from other computers on
my home network and on outside networks. I have tried all the tricks given in
the help tips but none work. I have looked at the HTML text on the blank page
IE6 it opens but it is totally different from the text of the document I sent
to the web. It is almost as if the browser is being misdirected to a blank
page somewhere on my computer which I can not find. Is anyone familiar with
this problem?

Hi PDW :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

IE opens blank/empty/white pages, or pages must be refreshed to see content:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#blank_windows

Blank Pages:

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined

If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Reset security level to default "medium"

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Dear Jan

Thank you for your help

I should have said I am running Win Xp with IE6 and have Service pack 2
installed (in fact reinstalled to try and get round this problem).

I had been to most of the links you gave me and performed the regisration of
the various files you mention I have also adjusted security settings and
checked for spyware with ad-aware from Lavasoft. I have now tried all the
links you kindly put together relating to Xp and IE6 and the additional
information you passed on, with the exception of requesting the hot fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823386. I have also changed some of the
meta tags for the character set and looked for the no-cache command on my web
page. Unfortunately the problem still persists.

Any other thoughts?

Still smiling

Peter

Hi PDW :-)

Thank you for the OS information. With so many now, having the version
information really helps narrow the field. :-)

Try these bits of information and see if they will lend some help:

Frequently Asked Questions about Internet Explorer printing problems or
printing blank pages

also......

As a reminder, AdAware is only for detecting adware, it does not detect
spyware or any other type of scumware, as it does not have the definitions
to do so. Nor does AV programs. SpyBot S&D detects and removes spyware,
but, has no definitions for adware or viruses. None of them detects or
cleans most malware. Also, there are some variants that can continue to
replicate themselves, or even mutate, if not cleaned properly.
Unfortunately, it takes a variety of programs to make sure your system is
clean, so I am in hopes that, if you have not already done so, you will run
all the various programs that are listed in the information and in the
manner according to the instructions to be sure your system is thoroughly
clean.
Still smiling

Glad to see you are still smiling. :-)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Adding a couple of "long shot" possibilities...
Have you cleared the IE cache? (Doesn't explain why Netscape has the
problem.)

Could a third party program be causing this? Firewall, Norton Internet
Security, Proxomitron, an ad-blocker, etc?

Check your HOSTS file. Make sure that Windows is showing hidden files and is
not hiding file
extensions for known file types then check for a HOSTS file (no extension)
at
[C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc] Open the HOSTS file with notepad. If there
are any redirect entries in it you can put the pound sign (#) in front an
entry to disable that redirect. Or you can rename the HOSTS file to (for
example)
HOSTS.OLD
More on the HOSTS file at http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

Hi guys,

I'm new to the discussion forum and have a similar problem to what you've
been describing.

When I open a print preview in IE6 I get the blank page you've been talking
about. However I've noticed a few other things that may or may not be
helpful:

- adding a header (or footer) string DOES work, e.g. adding '&w&bPage &p of
&P' in the page setup does give me "Page 1 of 1" in the header of my
otherwise blank print preview ... dunno if that helps specify the problem
better
- this problem seems to follow only certain logons ... so perhaps it is to
do with settings/permissions in the profile of the user logging on
- a quick&nasty fix is to add the user to the 'power users' group on the
local machine, then the preview works fine

I've tried the previous suggestions of changing the encoding, re-registering
..dll's, etc. but so far have not had any joy. Ideally I would like find a
fix where I don't have to give anyone local power user rights.

Please advise, any tips would be welcome.

Cheers, Stoff

AHA!

If local users don't have change permissions in the c:\winnt\temp folder
then IE doesn't know any better than to show a blank page when you print
preview a web page.

We gave local users change permissions to this folder, and the print preview
worked again.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Stof
