I have gone back thru some of the other messages left on
this newsgroup page, and have found this reply to someone
having the same problem as you..."Desktop fail on Windows
XP Home. "Ed (e-mail address removed)"
<[email protected]> Nov 28 2003

from Chris Lanier and another from Mike Brannigan, when u
click on the '+' sign, beside the message. I do hope this
helps you in some way...

I seem to have fixed my problem for now anyway. I went to www.kellys-korner.com and into windows xp boot problems &
edit. Down at the bottom of the page is a section "Disable
unnecesary programs at start up" do as it says.
After days of wrestling with the problem, I backed up my
system to another drive, re-formatted my C: partition
(with a Partition Magic boot disc) and then did a clean
install of XP. It took only half a day to re-install all
my programs and drivers so they would work.
