After start-up I see no icons in XP Desktop unless I press "Esc" then all
icons are revealed. Microsoft Knowledge Base is not helpful as article
KB330170 does not fix problem. I suspect that my 4 year old keyboard has an
internal fault and so needs replacing. Any comments or suggestions would be
much appreciated.

Create a new user account and see if this happens there as well. If
no, replace yoiur old account with this new one: "How to Copy User
Data to a New User Profile"

Thank you, TM, for the suggestion but it did not work nor did (1) replacing
the keyboard nor (2) rolling back the HDD using Norton Ghost (to the last
known good state). I suspect this leaves some kind of motherboard / card /
connection fault, so I will try connecting the keyboard via USB instead of
the existing PS/2 connector.

However, if anyone has any other suggestions, I would be really, really,
pleased to hear and try them.

Thank you
Kevin
