I just booted my Compaq notebook with Windows 2000 Pro and
I do not get a login window. I get an empty backgroun and
a cursor (pointer). That's it! Any suggestions as to
what to try would be appreciated.

Return it... get your money back? ;)

Did you try ctrl+alt+del to get a log-on prompt?

Also...
Has the computer booted properly in the past?
If so, Press F8 when win2000 is starting up, and select "Last Good
Configuration" (or something like that...)

Also...
Did you recently install/uninstall some software or hardware?

ctrl+alt+del does nothing.

The computer has booted properly up until now.

No software changes have been made to the machine.

All options under F8 result in the same condition (i.e.
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Normal, etc.)

Big mystery here....

Go make a set of Boot Disks at www.bootdisk.com to W2K. Boot into Safe Mode
and select "last known good configuration"
If that doesn't work, do this:
Boot the same way again and choose Safe Mode in a Command Prompt
"Type" chkdsk /r/f and when it asks the question type Y and then restart the
computer.
Let me know what happens
