My Toshiba laptop running XP-home doesn't recognize a blank CD-RW when
inserted. It does recognize one if it contains some data.

Have you written before to CD-R or CD-RW?

Model of the drive in question?
Removed it from Device Manager and rebooted to have it re-added?
Is it setup to record?
When was the last time you recorded with it?

My Computer, right click on the drive, select Properties. Click on the
Recording tab. Is there a check mark next to Enable CD recording on this
drive?

I am not certain what you expect to happen. A blank CD-RW contains no data
or format. So obviously it won't open.

A cdr won't be recognized unless there is someting on it. Does your system
say something like "insert disk"?

Not so. A blank CD should appear in Windows Explorer. If I click on the
drive, it says, "please insert a disk into drive D" when a blank CD-RW has
already been inserted.

Yes, even though one has already been inserted.

I think I "Replied" instead of replying to group. Sorry. Yes, I can write
to CD-RW's which already contain data.

Correction.

I cannot write to a CD-RW containing data. I'm told the CD-RW is read-only.

I've written to lots of CD-R's but this is the first time I've tried to
write to CD-RW's.

Can you use your cd burning software to erase or format the disk? If so try
to format it and try again.

Hmm dont know what happened on the last post.

Format the disk if your software allows you to do that and try it again.

oops
