My niece used the computer, when I went to it later it
had frozen on the screensaver. I switched off the
electricity then turned it back on, XP wanted to Check
the disc, it did this then rebooted, I saw the windows XP
logo then when it should show the desk top I get a blank
blue screen, no error messages. The Laptop is connected
via a network and that is what I am using now. Any useful
assistance please?

Try and boot into safe mode, after you turn the pc on, start to tap the F8
function key when it gets close to starting to boot XP, this should take you
into a menu,

First try booting with, "Last Known Good Configuration"

If the sytem comes up great.

The issue really is why it hung, chkdsk ran because you didn't shut it down
properly.

Hanging could be caused by a number of things, commonly driver conflicts or
perhaps hardware. Hung screen saver may be graphics card driver related.
Have you updated any drivers or other software recently?

If the system fails to come up with last known configuration, see if it will
boot into "Safe Mode"

If it boots ok into safe mode, it may be a corrupt driver or some other file
preventing windows xp from booting.

Run the system file checker, which will try and restore any corrupt files
from backups windows xp keeps on disk.

start/run
sfc /scannow

If it can't find or the backup on disk is not useable, it will prompt you to
insert the windows xp release cd and reload the files from there.

Keep us apraised.
