Blacking Out

I'm using WinXP. When I move a folder, and maybe when I do other
thinks in Windows Explorer, the screen goes black for a second,
there's a noise in the CPU (maybe a disk drive?), the small icons on
the task bar disappear, the task bar disappears, then one by one, the
screen returns, the taskbar shows up, and the task bar icons fall into
place.

Here are responses I got on another board:

What is my SOLUTION?

========
Don't know about the doctors, but you're observing the classical
'shell autorestart' (explorer.exe). Run 'eventvwr.msc' and check the
errors.

========
It almost sounds like a reallly bad memory leak or insufficiant
memory. it could also be a corrupted operating system.

There were two scripts on line 157 -- I downloaded both but haven't
run them yet. I presume you mean the script that would prevent the
screen and icons from refreshing.

I'm a bit doubtful if that is the problem -- this blacking out,
accompanied by a "thunk" inside the CPU unit, happens about every two
minutes. And it's just started up in the last three days.

At any rate, please tell me which script on line 157 you want me to
try, an I'll give it a go.

Thanks but -- I don't think that's the problem.

My troubles have been reduced to one or two blackouts per hour,
now that I've run chkdsk /f. I've ruled out the hard drive as a
problem. and I've ruled out viruses and bots.

I really need some help. There's something wrong with the way my
computer is reading and accessing stuff from Windows Explorer -- I
guess that's called a shell problem?
