I'm thinking of buying one of the approximately $100 black/white laser
printers.

What would be a ballpark figure for the cost of a toner cartridge for
one of these printers?

The cartridge being quoted would be good for how many pages?

I'm just looking for some middle-of-the-road averages here.....

Thank you..... FJ Lee

FjLee,
My Samsung SCX-4100 ( a little over $100 when I bought it), came with a
starter cartridge that states it creates 1000 sheets at 5%,
New OEM Samsung Cartridge (3000 copies)= approximately $80 w/o shipping.
Remanufactured Cartridge (3000 copies) on EBAY= approximately $50
w/shipping.
Just toner ink for two(2) or three (3) refills on EBAY=approximately $20
w/shipping.

You might want to check the office supplies stores in your area, some are
offering refilling in the store while you shop/wait.

The above sounds like the best way to go.

Many very low end laser printers come with partially filled cartridges
"starter cartridges" with the printer purchase. They usually contain
50-30% of a normal cartridge fill.

The replacement cartridge is usually around $70-90, but as mentioned
contains up to 200% more toner.

Most manufacturers rate their yield based upon a 5% coverage rate per
page. This is not even a double spaced typed letter in most cases.

In the case of the smaller low end laser printers, the starter cartridge
may last about 500-1000 pages at low coverage usage. The replacement
cartridge may be good for up to 5000 pages.

For specific information, see the manufacturer's website and the
consumable descriptions.

For current HP printers you can find the page yield information at
http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/us/en/index.html. The page yields are
now based on industry standards, so you can directly compare across
different manufacturers if they all are using the ISO/IEC 19752 standard
test method. See
http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/articles/us/en/MonoLaserJetYieldArticle.html
