There is a small black square that has appeared on my
screen. It is visible no matter what application I am
running. My pointer is hidden behind it when it passed
through it. Any suggestins as to what it is and how to
get rid of it.

This is usually a graphics driver glitch. Contact your system or video card
manufacturer for help or an updated driver.

If it's not either #1) food stuck to the screen, or #2) a fly,
it could be a number of things:-
-First thing, is it is it a hardware problem, or software created?
* How big is the square? Is it 1 pixel on your monitor that is black?
* Reboot the computer, is it there before the computer gets into
Windows?
If yes, reboot again, this time, press the 'DEL' key a few times as soon as
the computer starts, it should go to the CMOS setup screen (usually blue).
If you have a problem evident now, it's your monitor. Time for a new one..
* Is everything ok when the WindowsXP splash screen appears during
loading?
- If yes, it should also be ok when you initially get to the desktop. As
you said you have a problem though when you are in Windows, you'll need to
figure out what programs are loading and causing your problem. Check your
StartUp folder and rule out anything there, then run 'msconfig' and see what
else is checked to start during bootup.
- Last thing, probably a good idea either way --- install the latest
video card drivers..

Let us know what happens.

is it a LCD display [flat panel]. Then it's most likely a "dead pixel".
they happen; most manufacturers will replace the panel only if it has 8 or
more dead pixels. but the sqweaky wheel does get the grease...
