Last weekend I got up to give a Powerpoint presentation
and had a near-disaster. I plugged my new Toshiba laptop
(P15-S409) into the host's projector and booted up. The
first stages of the bootup process appeared on the wall
screen, as expected, although my computer screen remained
black. Then the wall screen went black too, and nothing I
did could get a picture back. Tapping F5 had no effect.
Unplugged from the projector, the laptop works fine. The
projector worked fine as well--using another laptop.
I have to give this presentation again tomorrow--any
ideas on how to resolve this problem?
Thanks

First, a silly question just to make sure:

Do you really mean F5 or Fn+F5?
F5 by itself won't change the video settings on your Tosh.

If that's not it, it may be that the Tosh is set to Auto-select the monitor on
bootup. Poke around to see if you have a Toshiba Console program. Start it
and choose the Hardware Settings option. This gives you access to a bunch of
settings that you'd normally have to set in the BIOS setup screens.

There'll probably be a Display tab. Look for a setting that lets you choose
between autodetect and simultaneous. Pick simultaneous.

And finally, you could also try booting the computer normally (with the
projector disconnected). Once Windows is awake, plug in the projector and use
Fn+F5 to toggle the laptop into External + LCD video.

Steve,
Thanks. It wasnt' a silly question at all. It's been a
couple of years since I gave a presentation, and I had
forgotten that the correct sequence is Fn+F5, not just
F5.

Shazam! Glad to hear it.
