My turn on my computer but the screen is tottaly black.
I know the power is on but I think some Windows
application was corrupted or erased. What keys do I
press to get on a workable screen? I can not move my
curser or click on to anything because I can see anything
and I don't think it's the dimer or brightness setting.

Is the screen dark from the moment you boot. In other words you never see
anything on the screen through the entire boot, not just when you enter
Windows. If that is the case, it's not an XP issue. Perhaps a cable is
secure, perhaps the graphics card has become unseated, usually though these
would result in a message on the screen of "No Signal." More likely, the
monitor is no longer working.

Couple of quick questions (don't get insulted if I ask
some stupid questions- I'm just trying to eliminate the
obvious)
1) Does your monitor have a power light (a little LED
light usually next to the On/Off switch that shows the
monitor is powered on)? Is it green or yellow?
2) Does your computer beep a lot when you boot it up?
3) Have you checked your monitor's brightness and
contrast settings? I've seen a few cases where people
accidentally turned the brightness all the way down. The
monitor was functioning perfectly fine- it was just too
dark to see anything.
