Black Screen upon XP startup

I have a pentium III 500 Mhz IBM with an integrated S3
video chip.
I have XP Pro loaded and it has run great in the past.

I have tried many different routes to have the system
running but nothing
too advanced. It starts fine, goes through the IBM
startup sequence, then
the XP screen comes up and starts loading, then the screen
goes black and
you hear the startup music but nothing appears on the
screen, therefore my
assumption is that the operating system is still good
running properly and
that it is a configuration issue.

The screen works and all the connections are good.
The last thing that I plan on trying is clearing the BIOS.
I have also tried to boot in safe mode and it jumps back
to soft boot again.
Does anyone have any idea how I could rectify this.

Thanks for your help.

Pres F8 and boot oin safe mode, run msconfig and unclick all
the programs in eth start up section reboot and try again.
