Black screen upon XP startup

I have a pentium III 500 Mhz IBM with an integrated S3
video chip.
I have XP Pro loaded and it has run in the past.

I have tried many different routes to have the system
running but nothing
too advanced. It starts fine, goes through the IBM
startup sequence, then
the XP screen comes up and starts loading, then the screen
goes black and
you hear the startup music but nothing appears on the
screen, therefore my
assumption is that the operating system is still good
running properly and
that it is a configuration issue.

The screen works and all the connections are good.

Does anyone have any idea how I could rectify this.

Thanks for your help.

Try booting into safe mode and resetting your resolution to a lower
resolution. It sounds as if your system is running okay, but cannot support
the video resolution on the monitor. Once you are able to logon normally,
make sure that you have the correct video card and monitor drivers.

Sorry it will not boot to safe mode either, actually maybe
1 in 10 times. I think I will try to reset the BIOS on
the PC and then go from there.
Any other suggestions would be great.
Take Care
