I am looking for some suggestions re: the following problem....

I have a one year old HP Pavilion US2214 running Vista.

Worked fine 'til last week when powering up I briefly saw the screen image
kinda flash some diagonal colors and then nothing.

AC is fine as I can power up and get all the purple keyboard lights etc
coming on but the screen remains black.I hear the CD drive click once or
twice but nothing from the hard drive.

I hooked it up to a monitor to check screen and I get the same result.

Only other thing I observe when I power up is that the fan spins for about
3-4 seconds and shuts off.

Time for a new laptop?

Thanks for any help.

If the machine is still under warranty, get it repaired. What you've
described is definitely hardware failure and it sounds like multiple
components, not just one thing. If you didn't buy an extended warranty (and
I always suggest doing that *plus* accidental coverage with laptops), then
call HP tech support and see what it would cost to replace the motherboard,
etc. Then you can make your decision accordingly. A year-old laptop isn't
very old but if it was a cheapo one and the fix is almost as much as it
cost... Only you know this so you're the one who has to decide.

John,

Thanks so much for the link...as the symptoms mentioned for the free repair
as exactly what occured in my dv2214us notebook...I lost the wireless connex
right before the screen went dead.

My only concern now if HP will still repair for free as I have taken the
notebook apart to look for any obvious signs of damage.

I will call them tomorrow and find out what they have to say and post back.

Thanks again

Just to update....

apparentley the motherboard is the issue and they do replace it free of
charge for up to 24 months after purchase.
