Black screen of death...

We bought a new emachines computer for Christmas. This is my first experience with XP at home. I have set up all five user profiles. When I change users it keeps the first one logged on, when I go back and try to log them off the computer screen goes black and the power button on the monitor begins flashing. Cont/alt/del won't bring it back, you have to unplug it and start over. Is this normal?
