a couple days ago I suddenly was unable to view videos. WMP 10 (i upgraded to
11 to try and fix the problems) would only show a black screen but I can
still hear it. the window will resize and everything, but it wont show
anything.
also, winamp, realplayer, and divx player has the same problem.
someone suggested to me that it might be a codec problem and told me to
download the codec package from cole2k.net
it still didn't fix it so it's not a codec problem.
before someone asks what file format I'm having problems with, it's ALL of
them (from avi, to mpg) save for quicktime files (.mov)
I have searched multiple threads and have seen that no one has gotten an
answer as to how to fix this problem and help would be appriciated
(i posted this in another thread but havent gotten an answer, hopefuly i
will here)

Codec packs..... never ever good news. Uninstall it.

OK, back to the beginning. Let's find out with which codecs these files
were encoded... download and install G-Spot from
http://www.headbands.com/gspot

Analyze the files and find out what codecs you REALLY need and not what
'someone' says you should get. The only 2 real essential ones are XVID and
DIVX which can be obtained from their writers... www.xvidmovies.org and
www.divx.com.

MPEG2 files need DVD decoding software... WinDVD or PowerDVD or similar.

So once you've found out with which codecs they were originally compressed,
let us know and we'll move to step 2.

the codec pack that i downloaded was suggested by one of those "geek squad"
guys from best buy, so i dont think that'll be an issue, but that's beside
the point

i ran gspot with one of my files (a mpeg) and told me that the codec (divx)
was installed properly. it still would not run
though when running tests i got only one error message
Failed to connect output pin 0x008f295c ("Stream 00") on AVI Splitter to
input pin 0x0384a15c ("In") on filter 0x0199dafa ("ffdshow raw video
filter"). ConnectDirect() failed. Error: 0x80040207: There is no common media
type between these pins

something i forgot to mention, an audio file i had ripped from that mpeg and
turned into a Windows Media Audio/Video file would do the same thing, show me
a black screen when it used to simply show me a visualization

I FOUND THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

i dont know what caused it, or what the feature is, but while i was going
through it and messing with the settings
i went under options, then performance, advanced (under video acceleration)
and unchecked "use overlays" the moment i did that my video files worked
PERFECTLY. i dont know what caused this to happen and i know that i didnt go
through all my players and selected the same option, but when i deselected it
my media players worked perfectly

THIS is the solution to the unsolvable black screen, the details behind it i
still dont know, i just know it worked
