Everything has been fine until last Sunday. Now I'm having real problems with
this as described below. I have not given system info as I didn't want to
bloat this post but, if someone thinks they can help, I will post it and
anything else if necessary.

Problem manifestation:

Computer screens go black (I have two screens on this PC). Similar to
hibernate mode - monitor's power buttons flash as in stand-by - but cannot
reactivate computer, even though susyem uint is running - all lights and fans
on etc. Only recouse is to hold down power button until 'hard' power-off.
Then power-on and reboot. Keyboard and mouse seem to have no effect but
difficult to tell with no display.

Incidence:

Occurs on Win XP 64bit PC when causing network activity on LAN when
interacting with network attached storage device (DLink NAS). Eg: File copy
or move to/from NAS server. Also saving from applications to directory on
NAS. This DOES NOT occur when moving/copying files on local machine, when
using Internet Explorer to browse web or using e-mail with TheBat. This
behaviour also DOES NOT occur using another PC (Win XP 32bit) or Laptop
attached to the same devices on the LAN. Does not happen every time so
intermittent sporadic.

Changes in state:

This has been occuring since installing Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 on
Sunday 2/11/2008 and also doing some changes to the IP setup to try to
reslove a problem of the PCs not finding the NAS on the LAN (these changes
have been reversed now - or I have tried). I am NOT AT ALL SURE if either of
these changes are relevant.

Things I have done to try to resolve:

1-Removed 'Kaspersky IS 2009'.
2-System restore to before 'KIS 2009'. Followed by full removal 'KIS 2009'.
3-Reinstalled 'KIS 7' slightly later build to my original 'KIS 7'.
4-Browsed event logs and tried to remove 'noise' from various events or
error that seem unconnected - this involved removing an old Safenet Sentinel
driver and disabling an old Alladin Hasp driver service. The only remaining
errors in the even log seem to be from Windows Search 'gatherer' and relate
to the MAPI handler which is apparently common and said to be non-critical.
5-I have uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Search 4.
6-Stumbled around clueless but did "netsh interface ip delete arpcache" and
also "netsh interface ip set wins name="Local Area Connection 2" source=dhcp
(noting that this is the active lan despite the "2".
7-Disabled second of the two network adapters on the MB.
8-Set browser service to Manual in sevices console.

The problem is still occuring.

I should add a couple of curiosities that I have noticed - they may not be
relevant but I'm too ignorant to know:

Ipconfig /all gives a Lease Obtained time of 1 second AFTER Lease Expires.
This seems strange to me.

Under "Things I have done..." I should have added that I have updated my
graphics (ATI FireGL V5600) driver and my network drivers (Marvell Yukon but
using the update from the MB manufacturer ASUS P5E WS Pro).

I am considering upgrading the BIOS but I'm wary of doing too many things
and muddying the water.

More things I have tried (a lot of thigs are just 'noise removal' but I have
probably strayed well into the woods now):

1-Unchecked LMHOSTS in all computers on the workgroup.
2-Removed protocols NWLink/IPX/SPX protocols on 32bit PC.
3-Made LAN "Trusted Network" in Kaspersky IS in all PCs.
4-Replaced LAN cable on possibly probelmatic PC.
5-Rebooted ASDL router. Verified allowed address allocation in router DHCP
(192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.200).

I have now set up my laptop to test what happens when there are three
computers on the workgroup (plus the NAS and the Router).

Let's call my main xp64 PC "No-5", my secondary x86 PC "No-7" and my laptop
"No-6" as that's what they are called on the workgroup (abbreviated).

All the computer names appear in my workgroup on all computers with
Explorer. BUT No-5 can access No-6, No-6 can access No-5, No-7 can access
both No-5 and No-6 BUT neither No-5 nor No-6 can access No-7 (the seemingly
common "...network path not found..." error message). I do not know if this
is relevant but mention it for completeness. I realise that it may be an
unrelated problem.

Now, I moved some AutoCAD files to No-6 (the laptop). On No-5 I can
successfully open AutoCAD, load the files, work on them and save to No-6, it
seems. However, if I try to do the same thing with the same files on the NAS,
No-5 crashes with the black screen. I can work normally on No-7 using files
from the NAS or No-6, no problem (so far) opening and saving files on the NAS
or laptop.

This is bizarre and driving me mad as it is well beyond my competence.

Me Too!!!!

I saw your post when desperately searching for a solution to the problem... You seem to be the only one that shares the specific issue! I noticed two major commonalities between your system and mine: Windows XP 64 and AutoCAD. Other than that they seem very different (see specs below). But the symptoms are identical, crashing only when doing file operations through the network (web access & email works 100%).

What version of AutoCAD are you using?

I can't remember what changed on the day it started crashing (it's been weeks now). But it has been quite consistant since that day. I might have the ODD day where it never crashes, or other days that it crashes 10 times, and I can't identify any differences in the conditions between those days. This machine ran for many months without a single crash before the problem started.

I should mention that I made a system change (can't remember how) that showed a BSOD instead of the black screen crash so I was able to see the system file that reported the crash. They have varied widely and I don't think any of the information is of much use in solving the problem. Here are some of the reported files and messages:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
USBPORT.SYS
MRXSMB.SYS
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER
BAD_POOL_CALLER
USBENHCI.SYS
RDBSS.SYS

Some of the MANY things I've tried:
- After two days completely reinstalling everything to a brand new hard drive, the problem persists.
- Disabled USB in BIOS
- Different network cable
- Different network port
- Using a network card instead of on-board ethernet
- Running at 100 instead of gigabit
- Improved system cooling/ventilation
- Air dusted the machine

System specs:
ASUS DSGC-DW Motherboard
On-board Gigabit Ethernet
4GB RAM
Dual Quad Core Xeon Processors 2.33GHz
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500
SATA Hard drives
Windows XP Pro 64 SP2
AVG Antivirus 8
AutoCAD 2009 64 bit
Adobe Creative Suite
3D Studio Viz 2008/3D Studio MAX Design 2009 64 bit

Have you solved your problem? Do you see any other commonalities between our conditions?
I'm going to keep trouble shooting (going to uninstall all the Windows updates and see what happens).

I'm thinking about uninstalling Autocad too but I'll have to find another machine to work on!

Thanks,
Steve
