P-IV and Celeron, home networked, with a HP CSe895 printer on the
Celeron, but also serving the P-IV, etc. I have always been
disappointed with the "Black" color really being a very Dark Gray and
finally turning a Dark Blue when my color cartridge ran out of Yellow,
telling me that it wasn't using the Black cartridge when appropriate;
eg - when printing black text from Word , or black graphics from
Visual Basic and other programs. I have tried every conceivable
"tweak" from within the printer properties as well as the printing
programs but NG. How can I get the printer to use the Black cartridge
when Real Black [RGB = (0, 0, 0)] is being called for?!

Buy a printer that isn't designed to drink ink. That's the whole line of
reasoning behind the "cheap printer".

Or set the printer to B&W or grey scale mode, or do like I
do, use a monochrome laser, all it has is black.

Prints the test page just fine, except again the black is composit
full Yellow + Cyan + Magenta

How about when you print using the printer's 'Test' page option.

Tried that; selecting Properties>General>Printing
Preferences>Paper/Quality>Black&White (instead of Color), and then it
prints nothing at all ! ...

WOW, get this !

As it turns out, my Black cartridge was out of ink, AND the
printer/system (BUT NOT ME) were somehow aware of this, and
compensating by using the YCM to simulate the Black.

Put a new Black in and all's well (love that rich Black tone! ...).

You should have a black ink cartridge, maybe it is empty.
Put a new #45 black in and replace the full 23 tri-color
with an empty, it will run one cartridge, but needs both in
place.

Did you try printing plain text from Notepad, or from a Command prompt? The
printer driver has a black only setting, you can try that too. Your printer
is similar in age and driver to my 882c so there's no reason other than a
defect/driver issue for it not to print from the black cartridge. Unless the
software you are using were designating a shade other than true Black
(0,0,0). The HP printer forums would be the place to inquire about this
problem.
