I bought a nice black case and moved everything across.

Now my black case has buff/cream/dirty white patches where the floppy drive,
CD drive is.

I know when you buy new you can determine whicj colour, but does anyone know
of a retailer that sells these things as stand alone.

UK resellers preferred.

It might be pretty tough to find ...

If you remove the hardware from your machine and clean the fronts well
with rubbing alcohol...they could be painted.

It would be a good idea to have an old floppy in the drive to be sure no
paint
got inside.

Flat black model spray paint from a hobby store is the most
cost-effective solution.

Not a good idea. Without a floppy, the dust guard will guard the insides.
With a floppy in it, the dust guard is open. And anyway, presumably you
want the dust guard to be painted black too. Also, in addition to cleaning
with alcohol, it would be a good idea to roughen up the gloss-hard plastic
with fine sandpaper. This gives much better paint adhesion.

Am I missing something? Why use paint, with all the preparation and
adhesion problems that entails, when you could just dye the plastic
black with vinyl dye (see the alt.comp.case-mods news group archives on
google)?

absolutely paint it....all the front cover bezels come off....remove the covers paint them put them back on... I suggests Krylons
new 'plastic' paint its very durable. Or some type of 'epoxy' paint. now a days the floppy isn't used all that much but you don't
want it to get scratched up.

also car paint shops.
theres a handful around that will mix paint to your spec - so take in your
pc front panel to match a black up, and tell them you need something that
will paint onto ABS plastic (most/all cd/fdd/dvd fasia's are ABS plastic
afaik)

i had a standard spray tin (330ml?) custom mixed for my honda, and it cost
around £10. colour match is 100% bang on, and the exsisting paint is 10yr
old.

You are quite right...
actually the suggestion to remove the bezel entirely is a good one too

or the dye method...
