My Epson 1270 prints everything out as big black and orange blocks and
saturates the paper.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

It sounds like your intensity is too high or you're using the wrong paper or
paper settings.

Thanks but I don't think thats it. I have been doing good prints for years
and have not changed anything. Even text printed from notepad just comes out
as big blocks of mainly black about 5mm square. It does not seem to happen
when I first turn it on.

Is there some form of built-in demo print or self-test? If so, try them.
If they are bad, then you have a major problem. It could be a driver chip
that runs the peizo heads. It almost sounds like it's firing all jets at
once, as if the nozzle selection is blown up and shorted together.

Try using Paintbrush or similar and just print out a few blocks of basic
colors (black, yellow, cyan, magenta.) Then try a few basic mixes
(green=cyan+yellow, red=yellow+magenta). If it is a bad head or
electronics, it'll probalby be cheaper to buy a new printer.
