Bizzarre Problem and no BIOS Setup

I have an old Dell XPS R450 a friend gave to me as payment for
building him a new PC. Everything was in working order for a long
time...then something strange happened.

I tried to set up WinXP on it, and the setup kept asking me to "put CD
1 in drive A:"...so for some damn reason I decided I'd disable the
floppy drive in the BIOS...I did, it gave me the same error as well as
a 'FLOPPY DRIVE ERROR' right after POST.

So I went ahead and re-enabled the thing in the BIOS and restarted
again...and it gave me the same 'FLOPPY DRIVE ERROR' right after
POSTing again. I tried disconnecting both power and data cables from
the drive and motherboard, still had the same problems. Except now,
when I try to go to the BIOS setup, it leaves me with a blank screen.

Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on here ?

I should also add, I popped out the only visible battery on the mobo
(assuming it to be the BIOS battery) for about 30 seconds, put it back
in and tried again...still no joy

i don;t know what the problem is

but to reset the bios...the battery should generally be removed for quite a
bit
longer than 30 seconds...

maybe 5 minutes...possibly a lot longer
