Never seen this before, but when i start up the PC the usual screen appears
but with a kind of granular appearance. There also ten vetical rectangular
patches that are filled with "noise". Start-up is also slower than usual.

A full system virus scan revealed nothing abnormal. The machine is
generally more sluggish than usual.

Is there a case, generally, to re-install Windows XP? Can the labour be
minimised or is it still a bit of hard labour? I should preferably now like
to devote my DELL machine to Photographic work alone.

You should try reinstalling your video adapter.
Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the device, Action menu,
"Uninstall", then Action menu, "scan for hardware changes", to find the
device drivers again automatically.
