I have been thinking about Bit Torrent lately. I know, it's weird to do that. Since it is (or could be) the latest thing and that everyone is on the bandwagon doing it, why not?

I have heard many things about Bit Torrent and still is unable to conclude if BT poses any kind of threats or harm to a computer system. I didnt think that, after all those awful news that happened to people's harddisk, my laptop will be a good starting choice to download BT files.

Is BT really that harmful?
My brother gets a lot of Japanese anime movies in BT format. I asked him at one time if ever his HDD failed on him. His answer? Yes. Harddisk failures seems to be the most common resulting from BT downloads? Can somebody confirm this?

Would anyone recommend BT downloads on the laptop's internal HDD or get an external one?
If you have any other news that we all should be watchful about BT, please make a note here too.

If you have a good HDD then you won't need to worry. I downloaded from BT almost 24/7 for the past year and I've had no problems with my HDD. Give it ago, and you will find that you have access to a wide amount of media.

I have only just started using bit torrent today, as i only just upgraded from dial up to 1Mb broadband.
I seem to get really rubbish download speeds of about 10-20KB/s most of the time and very rarely it does rise to 80-100KB/s.
I'm just enquiring if this is normal. If it was to stay as high as 100KB/s then I would be very happy, but when it's as low as 10KB/s for MOST of the time I just cant wait all the time it takes to download a file.
What is a normal download speed using bit torrent on a 1Mb connection?

how does one actually distinguish a "good" and a "bad" hdd? i use seagate and maxtor hdd's.

what about "rumors" that BT will, over time, make your hdd give up on you? google search this and you'll find such news.

and to the moderator, this thread was not intended to ask for BT download sites.

cheeeers!!

I'm not sure how you distinguish between good and bad hard drives. Like I said, I've been using it along time and my HDD runs fine.

Any mention of illegal downloads, and this thread will be closed.

Chris

As Chris says, be careful. Mods & Admin on here don’t like such references to illegal software/products

cache-man usually you can only dowload as much as you upload so its probably about 256kb upload, but it does vary depending on how many seeds and leechers there are
what bittorrent do you use?
i use azureus and with a 2.2meg d/l and 256 u/l i get anything from 5kb to 110kb
for downloads.

Usually this thread would have been closed by now, so yeah, as BL9 says, be careful...
Just out of curiosity, and I'm not trying to be a smart arse, why would have such a thread been closed by now? It's a file sharing software discussion. No comments were made to specific types of files, everything was pretty generic... I don't see why there'd be such a problem.

File sharing programs do have some legitimacy. I don't see why the second somethings mentioned about them a thread should be closed.

I've used BitTorrent a lot and have never had any problems, neither have I heard of anyone else's disks packing in prematurely. Desktop hard disks have a mean-time before failure of typically 500,000 hours. That's a long time. Granted, some drives are no longer warrantied for 24/7 continual use, but then laptops aren't usually on 24/7 either. That said, I wouldn't want to run BitTorrent for long on a laptop because they typically collect more wear and tear through general use and abuse through desktops. Now this, combined with disk intensive programs like BitTorrent, could cause a premature failure. But for desktop systems I wouldn't give it a second thought. If you defrag your disk once a week, you're probably taxing your drive more than moderate, continual BitTorrent use.

It's rubbish, I have used bt for years and I know other people have and I've never heard of a hd failure from it. the only possible reason is that it is constantly writing data whilst your downloading. But hey that would be happening with any other downloading. Sounds like a spook to put people off from trying to use it.
