BIT's problem

I cannot start Bit's in " stop and start services " it cannot start
because of a dependence (don't know which one) the error msg is " error2
cannot find the file specified ". question is where do I start ?
am running XP pro SP3

What a fine service for some malware to keep from starting.

Some malware will change %systemroot% in your registry to %fystemroot
%. You could just fix the registry, but you really need to be sure
you get rid of the malware.

As a test to see if this is your problem, you can scan your registry
for fystemroot and see if you have this infection, but you need to be
sure to get rid of the malware that changed it.

First, perform these malware scans:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these three free
malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
AVG (AVG): http://free.avg.com/

After that, if BITS does not work and the registry entries are still
incorrect, search the entire registry for:

%fystemroot%

If you find any instances, change them to:

%systemroot%

Press F3 until you find all entries and fix them.

Try to start BITS and Automatic Updates services again.

I don't think a reboot is required, but rebooting will eliminate the
need to ask the question "is a reboot required".
 
Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and right
click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select Properties,
Dependencies tab to see whats BITS is dependent on.

It would be helpful to see an exact copy of the Error message?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
