Is data protected in any way, and if so, how, in sleep/hibernation modes or
if the battery runs down?

Only when hibernating, not when sleeping.

So if the battery goes dead and someone recharges it, the data would be
unencrypted and available?

when your battery runs down the machine is powered off. Once powered on they
would need to perform a bitlocker check.

Or it is hibernated depending on how you've got the power
scheme configured in which case BDE protection is still
enabled.
