Hi, can anyone tell me how good or bad this free virus program is? I'm
looking for the best free program out there. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks.

That's a on-demand scanner only, did you know? It's quite good. If
on-demand scanning is what you want, there are a couple of other
alternatives as well.

What do you mean by a on-demand scanning?

It means you select drives or folders or files to scan. There's no
background or "realtime" av running all the time. Most people
use av that have the realtime monitor capability. Those av will
also be able to scan on-demand. In the case of Bit Defender,
the reason it's free is that it lacks the realtime monitor function
that most users want.

Dave Lipman posted links to a few "free for personal use"
products that include a realtime monitor.

Thanks to a post from "Art" I use it and I am pleased with it. Of
course, I can't say how effective it is at finding all viruses. It has
the great virtue that it does _not_ continually monitor your computer
and it does not complain that you have switched that feature off. I
liked AVG and used it with the real time feature off but the free
edition insists that you scan the entire disk. It could not complete
the scan overnight on my machine. Bit Defender has a flexible system
to schedule scans and specify files and directories to scan.

have a look at what David Segall wrote today about BD 8 free edition for
example (I'm not further familiar with this free edition). I'm happy
with BD Professional Plus version 9 (payware) with the additional
features of On Access scanning, Firewall, E-Mailscanning etc. etc..

Thanks for all your help! I am currently using Comcast's free McAfee
virus, firewall, and privacy service. How good is this?

I can tell you that the detection rates of McAfee have long been
excellent. Their scanner is based on the former Dr Solomon product
which was purchased by NAI. I'd say if you're satisfied with McAfee to
stick with it. Many users aren't happy with it, but for other reasons
than its ability to detect malicious code.
