Touchy subject - Pirate software must NOT be discussed here. It's good for legal stuff...

If it is, i will close this thread.

Exactly :)

Bit Torrent wasnt designed as a peer to peer file sharing mechanism, the original implementation was load balanced distribution for streaming ...

Kinda explains how the creator (Bram) is now a fulltime employee for Valve .. working on improving their steam platform :)

I use BitTorrent all the time now, I can get really fast downloads on things like 3DMark05 which is a few hundred megs, and not alot of people will host that. I'm aware that most usage of it will be for downloading pirate software, but I hope that is not the case here.

As Shorty says, BitTorrent is a great idea for distributing downloads quickly and without using up lots of bandwidth.

But which one do i download? There's so many files!!! Please whoever directed me to http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ could you give me a step by step guide if you have the time, otherwise i have no chance!

one of my mates was telling me about this thing. it goes through HTTP, just like a normal download in internet explorer. i rekon this is the best part of it!

the bizzare thing is, the more ppl that have it the more downloading gets better, its really strange!!!
i think it uploads and downloads at the same time! never used it properly but from what ive seen its too slow!!!

Torrenting is distributing technology.

One person initially "seeds" a file.

That is tracked by a tracker which logs this persons level @ 100%.

If the tracker is announced, then others can connect to the tracker and find the seeder. As they download the file to 100%.. they are known as leechers or peers. The moment they download a single bit, if there is another than needs that bit, it will be shared. That's why the more downloaders, the better. More peers who are uploading bits and more seeders who are uploading bits.

Once they have 100%, if they leave the app open.. they become seeders as well as the initial seeder. Anyone connecting to the torrent can connect to the seeders and peers for "bits" of the file (until they reach 100%).

Torrent is depending on sharing. Really sharing.

If everyone doesn't bother to seed upon 100% download then it's going to be slow.

It's mechanism prevents those who just logon to grab a download and then log off.. which is bad etiquette (If you are into P2P sharing). The moment you have downloaded a bit.. you are a peer and can upload that to someone else. No fake sharing, no downloading without uploading. Fairer in P2P terms.

But if they dont seed and the initial stops seeding as well.. then the torrent will die.
