I'm in a bit of a pickle if anyone can help me out?

I replaced my rather burnt motherboard last week and windows didn't
particulary like it. So I took some advice and wiped my master hard drive as
windows wouldnt let me even run the operating system cd. I fdisked it,
formatted it and reinstalled windows and hallejuah it works just fine.......

but! the second slave hard drive no tells me in windows that it is
unformatted! now i saved all by work/mp3s/files etc important things on this
drive! i dont understand why it now believes it is unformatted as I did not
even touch it with a toothpick, going back into fdisk the drive status tells
me that the second drive is now in two partitions (just how!?) the first is
non-dos and the second is labelled D: and is primary does but it's system is
unknown. But when i ran D:/>dir it listed all the files/folders that were
there before?!

Does anyone know any way to recover my data?
The only two routes if thus found have been to run unformat in dos on d: but
this just comes up with "bad command or file name" or to send of the hard
drive to a company who can recover the data(but at a cost!)

Thanks!
Jeff

(From now I will always backup on cd)
