Bit Defender- question

A screensaver, always a risk. Testing the executable before running it.

I ran BD on the executable, it's scan found a virus. I selected Delete,
ran the scan again, still there. I ran Disinfect, still there. I ran Move
to Quarentine, still there.

What is the setting that BD will remove the virus permanently?

BTW, Ewido did not detect the virus.

Did you try scanning the drive in Safe mode?

in safe mode?

Malware is less likely to be active and protected (locked) by the
system.

BTW, when posting questions here, attempt to supply all pertinent
info, such as the version of Windows, scanners you've tried, and
under what conditions (such as safe mode or other) you've run the
scanners.

My OS is W2K/SP4

You are, from your website, familiar with W2K.

I have been trying to get into Safe Mode, pressing F8 at exactly the
right instant, can't do it. Maybe at age 73, my reactions aren't fast
enough.

I asked on W2K ng and F8 was the answer. I loaded msconfig, no startup
screen like Safe Mode in options. Maybe didn't have right version of
msconfig to copy to W2K.

Do you know a better way to get into Safe Mode?

It's annoying. I have to hold down the key and let it beep, and my
reflexes are still a bit faster than average.

No boot floppy? No CD?

Art? Is there a round about way to get the Windows Start Menu to come up
on it's own, like changing "timeout" in the "boot.ini" file? I forgot
how I did it in Win98SE.

Then simply keep the key depressed during the bootup process. If you
don't have the Recovery Console installed, or a multiboot arrangement,
it won't be clear just when to press f8. It's a good idea to install
the Recovery Console anyway. I suggest you do that. Then the boot.ini
file will include a delay period (maybe 10 or 30 seconds) during which
time you make up your mind which to select ... the Console or Windows.
But during that time, Windows is selected by default. So pressing f8
during that time will cause a Safe mode selection screen to appear.
I suggest choosing plain Safe mode.

Oh, yeah. That's what I changed. I did not know about the menu path.

To the OP: I like to dump the start up screen as well. Search for
"logo.sys", rename something like "XXXlogo.sys", open Notepad and save
the blank file in it's place as "logo.sys". I think there are two of
them in W98SE. Don't know about Win2000.

The three 'BootMenu' lines will allow you to easily start up
in Safe Mode when you want to, along with other choices. I
have mine set for a 3 second delay of that boot screen so
there is little delay when no choice is made and the boot
sequence automatically continues with a normal boot into
windows. Hitting any key like 2 or 3 will stop the boot process
at that screen so you can make your selection. Therefore, I find
a longer delay is not really needed. Watch for the screen shortly
after turning on your computer.

This is ALWAYS my entry method for Safe Mode in Win98SE.

Right-click 'My Comuter', select Properties -> Advanced -> 'Startup
and Recovery', and tick 'Display list of operating systems for x
seconds' (changing x to to a suitable number).

Alternatively, edit boot.ini with Notepad. The first line should be:

[boot loader]

The second line should be:

timeout=x

where x is the number of seconds to display the menu. Add the line,
or change x to a suitable number, e.g. timeout=20. Be careful not to
change anything else in the file.

boot.ini is a hidden system file, so 'show hidden files and folders'
must be enabled if you are editing it via the Windows Explorer GUI.

You don't need that fast a reaction. Just after the POST (when computer
beeps) you'll see at the bottom of your screen what resembles a series
of 'piano keys' moving from left to right, with 'Starting Windows' (or
similar) written above it. While that's happening press F8.

Win2k is completely different from 9x. None of the above is relevant.

Thanks to all for the advice.

I finally got into Safe Mode.

BitDefender won't run in either it's shortcuts or the executable.

Ewido ran, again found no virus, BitDefender did before.

Clamwin opened, then closed.

Is there a surefire way to run a BitDefender executable in Safe Mode? And
what is the file name? There are a number of executables in the folder.

Thanks, BoB, that did work in W98SE. Elseware in thread, I finally got
into Safe Mode without mods.

You are not just a pretty face, Larry. I will download that one later
and try it cuz the fellow that built this computer changed things a bit
and I now forget how to get into Safe Mode, but it is a tad trickier
than usual.

BitDefender won't run in either it's shortcuts or the executable.

Sorry for the bum steer then if BF doesn't run in Safe mode. I suggest
running my NTFSDOS utility. Start out in Normal mode Windows. Let
the SFX extract to the default c:\kavdosnt (it will create the
folder). Then run the batch program in that folder KAVDOSNT.BAT
and let it download def files. You can try scanning in normal mode
Windows, but it would be better if you rebooted and went into Safe
mode before using the batch program again to scan your drive.
Alternatively, you can use the KAVDOS.EXE user interface program
instead of the batch program.
