I'm trying to get into my bios (xp pro), when I click on
DEL at start up, the monitor goes strange showing
distorted horizontal text ... how do I change this?

How one enters the BIOS has nothing whatsoever to do with the
operating system, as the system has no 'knowledge' of the OS at boot.
Therefore you're really posting in the wrong place, but a problem
like that at this point would be hardware related as there is no
software loaded at that point. Does your graphics card function
properly in all other respects - do you even HAVE a graphics card?

"do you even HAVE a graphics card?" Actually, Baffled has a Limited Edition Swarovski leaded crystal prism for the purpose of video display.

Baffled: Unplug the PC and monitor from the 120/240V mains. Disconnect and inspect both ends of the video cable for bent pins or other signs of damage. Also, wriggle the connection to see if it's loose. If you're comfortable with opening the case, reseat the PCI or AGP card it the appropriate slot. Plug it back in and try booting. It that doesn't help, you'd be best to swap monitors and/or video cards to narrow down the culprit.

I meant as opposed to chip. I do not consider a SiS graphics controller, for
example, a graphics card.

I thought you, of all people, would understand that!

I'm sure I'm posting in the right place. My XP pro will
not detect new hardware.

I've been told here to alter the BIOS.

I had problems getting ito the BIOS but now I've changed
the monitor - I can get into it but I'm not sure now what
I need to change in order to instruct my PC to detect new
hardware.

Your baffled , so arethose who may be able to help you!!!!
Perhaps if you tell the group what new hardware you are adding or
attempting to, then they maybe able to ascertain whether any setting
in the bios of your PC has any effect on the PC not seeing it or not
OR whether in fact it maybe window XP causing the problem...
too many variables as yet. repost giving more information.

You say you've changed the monitor. Good. Did this correct your original
problem with distorted horizontal text ?

Press Delete to enter the BIOS and reset BIOS defaults. This might read
"Load Setup defaults". Save and Exit.

When you say Windows XP fails to detect new hardware, what hardware do you
speak of ? Type, brand and model number would be good.Generally, after
installing the hardware and installing the drivers, Windows XP will detect
most new hardware. Does the Device Manager show an yellow "!" marks or a red
"x" ?
