You can't get into the bios through Windows, you access it at startup. How
you get there depends on what computer you have. Generally, if you watch
closely at startup, you should see a message that says press (somekey) to
enter setup. So press that key.

That is not in BIOS and there is no way to get to the BIOS from within XP.
You will have to find your printer software and make your setting
adjustments from there. I can't tell you where to look because, it varies
with different brands of printers.

I am using a toshiba TE 2100 on win xp professional. The
other day I was given a command to put in the run
facility to change my computer BIOS settings from ECP to
standard. I can't remember what the command line was as I
have since had the CMOS battery changed hence my need to
change the settings again. Perhaps this was another way
ot alter the settings

D. Currie,

You are absolutely right in your information except, he hopes to change his
printer settings there???

JAX

the command line had CWP or CHP in it

Greetings --

The BIOS _cannot_ be accessed from within WinXP, unless the
motherboard manufacturer has provided you with a custom utility
designed for that express purpose.

The operating system is immaterial. Only you know what
motherboard and BIOS you have, so only you know the answer to your
question. ;-}

In the extremely unlikely event that your PC's manual or the PC's
manufacturer's web site doesn't provide the needed information, try
one or more of the following:

How do I access my computer's setup (BIOS)
http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/2157.html

Wim's BIOS Page
http://www.wimsbios.com/

Accessing Motherboard BIOS
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

You should also be aware that it's very easy to render, at least
temporarily, your PC unbootable by making an incorrect change in the
BIOS. So be very careful.

Hi, JAX.

As Tony said in another message, he needs to change his parallel port
settings from ECP to SPP, so he probably does need to do it in the BIOS.
Since his printer evidently plugs into the parallel port, he thinks of this
as "printer settings".

Tony, as others have told you, this is not a Windows question at all. BIOS
adjustments are made on startup, long before the computer even starts to
load Windows. The "secret" should be in your Toshiba manual You DO have
one, don't you? You HAVE read it, haven't you? If you can't find it there,
ask Toshiba, not Microsoft. Or see Bruce's post.

Thanks R.C.,

For some reason, all that loaded on my machine was the one post where he
said,

"Can someone please tell me the command to get to the BIOS

alter the printer defaults"

Now it makes sense as to why he needs into the BIOS

Cheers, JAX

All sorted. Its took me a while to realise that this was
a Toshiba utility as I knew I had previously accessed the
bios settings through the run command in windows XP. I
have accessed the BIOS now through this facility.

The trouble for me was that when the bootup sequence
started there was no sign of how to access the bios
(which key to press).

Thanks to all

Thanks for the report, Tony. Now we'll have a better idea of what to tell
the next person who posts with a similar question.

In a newsgroup, we all learn from each other. So, for the benefit of
anybody who may be reading over our shoulders (In newsgroups, we call that
"lurking" - and it's a GOOD thing! It keeps others from asking the same
questions over and over.), it's YOUR turn to be the teacher. ;<)

How DO you access the BIOS on a Toshiba? Which key do you press? And what
is the name of that Toshiba utility? Thanks for that information.

There is an icon in the control panel called Toshiba HW
Setup. When selected this gives you avvess to all the
bios settings including power up password, printer
settings (as needed by me), Boot up order, CPU settings.
This was the thing I originally accessed through
the 'run' command as that was how our IT department
instructed me to do this. I have three Toshiba laptops,
but this is the only one which has the facility so I
guess it is a fairly new innovation (well within the last
couple of years anyway).

Thanks again

Aha!

Thanks for that explanation, Tony. The Toshiba HW Setup (or any HW Setup)
is something that most of us don't have and had not even heard of. It sure
sounds like a useful utility, and I hope many other computer makers and BIOS
vendors will figure out how to put something like that inside Retail and
other OEM versions of Windows.
