Not sure if this is right group to ask. I'm trying to upgrade my BIOS. I
bought my HP Pavilian &(^% in September 2001. the BIOS update for this is
from nov 2001 or dec 2001. I'm having trouble using the MS-DOS Boot disk
that the people at HP told ne to create. When I restart my pc with MS-Boot
dis in A drive, I hit function key 8 when I first see the HP logo and system
comes up with choices--1 normal boot Shift + F5 key -safe mode with command
prompt (?-not sure) or F% key for safe mode. whichever way I use safe mode
(F% or Shift + F%) the a prompt appears. When I try to move to c drive I
get "Invalid Drive Specification" message. The Bois program is on C Drive.
Is ther a way to do a safe boot where I could access the c drive? Thanks in
advance. OS windows XP home edition up to date with all required updates.

Is your C drive NTFS? If it is then that explains why you can't find the C
drive. I would recommend if it will fit to put the program on the floppy.
Most BIOS updates will fit completely on a floppy.

The people at HP dont know what a bootdisk for a bios flash should be.

You dont want any drivers whatsover running.

James,

May be a dumb question, but what is the purpose of the BIOS upgrade?
What problem are you fixing?

I have flashed the BIOS on different computers and your
description doesn't sound correct to me. The usual
process is to:
(1) Download a program from the vendor which will create a
floppy boot disc.
(2) Run the floppy creation program.
(3) Make sure that the BIOS boot sequence is to have the
floppy (removable) first.
(4) Put the floppy in the drive and boot the computer.
(5) Follow the prompts.

The flash program should not have anything to do with the
C: drive after the floppy is created. You shouldn't need
to worry about safe mode since the flash operation is run
in DOS from the floppy drive.

I've seen descriptions of short cuts using the C: drive
but I have never gotten them to work.

Hope this helps.
