When you start to have conditions where software or the hardware gives warnings of BIOS errors. For the most part, the BIOS version does not need upgrading for the life of the machine, unless there is a problem that warrants it.

Please don't post HTML.

Upgrade the bios when you find the system has a problem that
is specifically addressed in a bios update, per the notes
the manufacturer provides. It might also help to upgrade it
when you find a bug that "shouldn't" exist, the manufacturer
might not have fully notated the bios changes per each
revision. Don't try to update the bios on a system that is
very instable, crashing may corrupt the bios and then you're
worse off... unless of course it's a last-attempt, you have
no other possibilities for resolving some problem.

Then there is a more presumptious mind-set about bios
upgrades- Usually a motherboard's early bios revisions
aren't nearly perfect, if the motherboard has an early bios
revision on it, then it might be a good idea to at least
download and archive some newer bios so that if you ever
needed to update the bios, you'd have it available.
Sometimes after boards get older the manufacturer doesn't
support them very well anymore and it's much harder to find
a bios update years later rather than within the first year
or two of it's production.

If you are not having any problems with your computer that you KNOW FOR A FACT will be fixed with a BIOS upgrade, then DO NOT upgrade your motherboard's BIOS. Such upgrades fairly frequently make the motherboard inoperable.
