I have the option to upgrade my bios on my Aopen
motherboard. It has some fixes and a few new features.I
know bios updates are not as simple as windows updates.I
guess what I am looking for is a little advice from the
knowledgeable people in this forum. When is the right
time to do a bios upgrade?I have a decent system but am
always looking for some new features or extra little
somethings. Thank you

Do the upgrade, there should be instructions with it,you
need to format a floppy disk w/ms-dos,then reboot with
it installed, usually a cmd is given to use.

I have done BIOS upgrades approximately 15 times over the
last 8 years without a problem, until two months ago and
I finally had one wiped out the BIOS, I would have to get
a new pre-burned chip from the board manufacture that
thing wouldn't even boot to a floppy. I thought it was
time to upgrade anyway so I bought a new MB and processor
instead. But I still had to upgrade the BIOS on the new
board because a lot of time the BIOS are out of date when
you get the boards. The new one had a windows utility
that came with it and it ran in XP, went out found new
BIOS and asked me if I wanted to upgrade and since I was
having intermittent hard lockups with the new board I had
to go for it again and it worked fine and fixed my lockup
problems. Therefore, I guess my point is I will only do a
BIOS upgrade if I have researched it and there is a fix
for something that is causing me problems. If there are
upgrades to parts of the board I don't use or mine is
working fine I don't bother anymore.
