I just updated my bios but now upon boot-up, the screen shows, single
channel mode for memory. I have DDR ram, how do I change the bios to see
this. Everything on boot was working good prior to this. Thanks

How many simms of DDR ram did u put in?

You need 2 for Dual channel mode and of
the same speed, and in the slots on the motherboard
which maybe color-coded.

It's most probably single channel mode if you've
only put in 1 simm. Or put 2 simms in but in
the wrong slots. It also doesnt necessarily say
on bootup that DDR Ram is installed.

As Paul said, you need two sticks in the right slots -- check your manual,
and of course this depends on whether your chipset is dual channel capable.

DDR has nothing to do with dual channel; it means "Double Data Rate," e.g.
there are two transfers per clock cycle.

You can have DDR RAM in single channel, DDR RAM in dual channel, these are
two different concepts, two different functions that are not related.

Another possibility assuming that you HAD Dual Channel results beforehand
with two sticks of RAM in the right channels, would be that the bios flash
screwed things up; of course it depends on which board you have, which bios,
etc. If this is the case it might help to power down, unplug the computer,
remove your CMOS battery, then short the CMOS jumpers, per your owners
manual.

Good Luck,

ken

Single channel DDR ram is normal.

Single/Dual channel has nothing to do with SDR/DDR.

If your mobo supports Dual channel though, you're a fool for not having
utilised it.

If you want a good answer to your question, you'll need to tell us the
following:
1. What model Asus motherboard are you using?
2. How many memory modules are you using?
When we know the above, we can tell you if dual channel is possible.

I have a a7n8x and want to use 2 512 DDR 400 modules. Thanks to all for
their inputs.

Which A7N8X? the A7N8X-Deluxe, the A7N8X-E (I think that's right) or the
A7N8X-X?
The A7N8X-X does not support dual channel, the others do.
You do need two DDR modules in the correct slots. IIRC, my Deluxe has two
slots that are blue, the other black. I put my modules in the two blue slots
for dual channel.
Sorry, but it's been a while since the build, so I can't recall if the
instructions told me where to put the modules, or not.

I have the a7n8x. I installed the modules in the wrong slots. I put it in
slot 1 and 2, but it's suppose to go in either 1 and 2, or 2 and 3. Thanks
for all your help.

Slot 1 and 3 or 2 and three for dual channel, 1, or 1 and 2 for single.

And yes, the standard A7N8X supports dual channel mode.
The A7N8X-X does not.
