I know that this doesnot pertain to microsoft but I dont
know who to ask. When I am in my Bios setup there is a
part that says S.M.A.R.T for hard drive. Enable or
Disable. Does anyone know what this option is?

But does WinXP listen, and advice the user in some useful fashion,
without you also run some 3rd party monitoring software? (SMART also
allows for self-test, temperature monitoring, and a whole bunch of other
stuff .. most, if not all, of which I don't believe XP natively
utilises, even if you turn the facilities on in the BIOS).

AFAIK XP has no native report on this, except *perhaps* in the error
log. You can get a third party program to look at it and report - but
the one I tried was misleading to interpret. The major benefit is that
if something starts to go seriously wrong you will get a report from the
BIOS itself, right at Power on. And if something has started there is a
high probability that it will cause a crash leading to that boot up
before any very serious trouble has accumulated
