BIOS problem

Hello,

My PC has functioned without problems for years.
What is the problem since a couple of months is
that sometimes it has problems with booting up.
I get errors like incorrect hardware setting
for the VGA card, or exceptions, or a message
that the registers are corrupted.
If that occurs and I reset again with CTRL-ALT-DEL
(softboot) then very often it reboots without errors.
After this the PC keeps working without problems
until it is switched off and on again (hardboot).

I checked the CMOS battery, replaced the DRAM
replaced the HD reset the CMOS to defaults and
reinstalled WIN98-SE and
applications from scratch with no improvement.

The mainboard is a MSI 745 Ultra with socket-A
and AMIBIOS.

A diagnostic utility I used detects no errors.
Could the problem be the PSU since it works correctly
after a softboot and not after switching it off and back
on (after leaving it off for a while).

When you say you, "checked the CMOS battery", did you check it with a
voltmeter or did you measure the current output with a series resistor ?

Why check the battery. If you suspect it, replace it. Probably a 2032.
You can get a couple of them at Radio Shack for about $5.

For a start, replace the CMOS battery. Most likely this will do the fix for
you. If not, then there are some serious problems with the mother board, or
some other device in the computer.
