Hello all,

I'm looking for a bios patch. I have a 160GB hard disk and i'd like my
bios reconized it.

My bios id is 10/20/1998-ALADDIN5-2A5KKB0FC-00

Someone knows where i can find a patch?

Thanks for your help.

regards.

Pozdrawiam.

According to http://www.wimsbios.com/, your mainboard was made by Biostar
(www.biostar.com.tw). You'll need to identify the exact board to get the
proper BIOS update (Sandra from http://www.sisoftware.net/, or Everest from
http://www.lavalys.com/ - both exist in free versions).

It's possible that there won't be a BIOS update that supports LBA48 drives
for this old Super 7 system. One alternative would be to install a cheap
third-party PCI IDE controller card, such as an Ultra100 TX2
(www.promise.com). you could also try the "overlay" software that shipped
with the drive (or that you can download form the drive maker's web site),
although can't recommend it. (I believe that with the overlay, the drive is
only correctly seen in Windows.)

Good luck.

I've seen patches to add 137GB support to BIOSes with the 33GB limit in
them, but the people who wrote them said that a patch to support larger
drives (48-bit LBA, which works with drives up to about a million times
larger) is much more complicated.

www.unicore.com sells BIOS upgrades for mobos not supported by
manufacturers, but they want at least $25 (e-mailed to you; $50 for
regular mail), and it won't support 48-bit LBA if the current BIOS is
Award ver. 4.xx (probably what you have), but they do for Award ver.
6.xx). But for less money you can buy a plug-in controller card that
not only supports huge drives but also higher transfer rates and RAID
and lets Winn98/98SE/ME access the drives beyond 137GB. This card
seems to work well: http://tinyurl.com/6xy4q and is $13, delivered.

First, find out exactly who made your motherboard and then find out the chipset
(Intel BX, VIA KT133A etc) and the model#. An example would be Abit NF7 or MSI
VNF3-250.
Then go to the makers website and find the BIOS that exactly matches your
board. Looks like your chipset is the Ali Aladdin 5.
That's an old chipset and may not support hard drives that big.Or even the
ATA100/133 speed.

If you must keep an antique like this, buy an add-in card and forget any
BIOS "patches", third-party BIOS "upgrades" or any garbage like that. I'd
suggest scrapping the board and starting over though.

No surprise. Problems with obsolete hardware is often solved by hardware
that isn't. Now if I could get my SATA drive working...
