Hi Tim -
Do you have a USB keyboard connected to your system? If so, you probably
need to borrow a PS/2 keyboard to get into your BIOS. Read in your
motherboard manual, check on the manufacturer's website or call the
manufacturer and ask if there's an option in the BIOS to enable legacy USB
support; might be labeled such as "USB Keyboard Support via" with options
to select OS or BIOS - choose BIOS.
As to your problems with the checksum error: I would suspect that your
motherboard battery might be getting a little weak. Check the
aforementioned sources as to the location and type of the battery on your
motherboard and, if you have a voltimeter, check it: it probably should
meter about 3.3 volts when fresh. Anything lower than about 3.1 volts could
cause your computer to begin to have problems with retaining CMOS settings
and losing the system real time clock value. If you don't have a
voltimeter, you can usually have it checked at many electronics parts stores
(even Radio Shack or such store - I see you're in the UK and I'm not
familiar with your retail chains). There are occasions where your CMOS
settings might be lost without the battery being weak, but these are very
rare.
In any event, once back into your CMOS set-up menus, you'll have to reenter
everything. Again, you'll need the motherboard manual, etc., as a reference
in order to properly set these values. A good jumping off point would be
"Load Failsafe Defaults" if there is such an option.
Good luck.
