BIOS Fried?

Hi,
I have an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe.
I updated the BIOS to rev. 16 Saturday. Everything look OK except the voice
post reporter said some unintelligible thing on start up even thou it was
disabled in BIOS.

Then I lost my DSL connection. 2 days of tiring everything I know, the
shorting plug, pulling the CMOS battery, restart at default settings,
re-flashing with original BIOS from the CD.
I even disabled the CNR thinking it went bad. Installed a t10/100 without
any difference.

After calling Verizon tech support, we found that the DSL connection works,
sort of.
I can ping an IP and get a response, but it won't resolve a URL. tracert
won't resolve a URL or a route via IP.
WinXP services seem to be OK.

After 3 days the voice reporter still yaps, the 1394 fire wire connection
shows up installed in Windows. Both are disabled in BIOS. BIOS obliviously
is not saving all the changes when I select that option on exit. DSL still
won't resolve URL's Yet I can get to this machine thru my network/router.

And no, the DSL won't work direct to the DSL modem.

Sound familiar to anyone?

You could disable the 1394 in the Device Manager.

Then, set up your LAN connection to the DSL again.

It sounds like maybe the appearance of the 1394 "grabbed"
the network connection from your regular LAN path.

Have you disabled full screen logo, so you can observe the
progress of the system while booting ? Perhaps there are
some messages on the screen indicating a problem. The
disabling of ports should be stored in the CMOS RAM, and
clearing the CMOS and/or doing a "Load Setup Defaults"
should straighten that out, after a BIOS flash.

I don't see how this is related to BIOS, save
the coincidence. Sounds like a DNS or
Verizon issue to me.

Tried restarting the DSL Modem?
Tried running IPCONFIG /flushdns?
Tried reinstalling the TCP/IP protocols?
Checked HOSTS file?

I have done that. It should not even show up in device mgr. when it is
disabled in BIOS.
That's one of the reasons I know something is wrong.

Tried that too. I don't see anything like an error msg. or problem.
To bad I can't dump it to a file so I can read it easier. (One problem with
todays computers. The text goes by real fast.)
I might try the windows debug startup. It does create a file that may have
something usefull.

I ordered a new MB. I will see if I can get this one fixed after the new one
is up & running.
I'm sure I will find a good use for a fourth machine!!
Maybe I will rebuild this one. (win2k, Intel MB)

On mine, I tried the Pause/Break key, and that seemed to stop it
so I could read the text. But that doesn't give perfect control,
in terms of starting and stopping at will.

The only other thing I can think of, is the BIOS is the wrong
one for the machine. I don't know exactly how chip disabling
works with the BIOS, as you never see outboard gate logic on
a motherboard, and not every chip has a disable/tristate
or similar pin, that can be used for the function. To disable
a chip, means to have the chip fail to return a response to a
chip select, so anything that can achieve that end will work
(like turning off the power to the chip with a MOSFET). If the
GPIO pins used for a function like that, change from motherboard
to motherboard, then the wrong BIOS would toggle the wrong pins.
