If I get a bigger monitor do I get more pixels or just bigger ones?

Put basically, is a bigger monitor no different from sitting closer to
a smaller monitor?

I know its the same fo say 14" and 15" but what about say 21"?

With a CRT the number of pixels depends on screen size and dot pitch (or stripe pitch). Since there is not much difference in dot pitch between monitors, a bigger screen will have more pixels.
With a flat panel display the number of pixels depends on native resolution. A 14" and a 15" flat panel display both having a native resolution of 1024 x 768 will have the same number of pixels.

It's different, but in a more important way too, typically a bigger
monitor supports higher refresh rates at the most commonly used
resolutions. For example, back in '96 I had a monitor that could only
support 75Hz @ 1024x768, but today the last CRT I bought will do
something like 100-120Hz, which is pretty important if you have fairly
decent eyes, as flicker is noticable around 90Hz or lower for most people.

21" takes a lot of desk space, IMHO it'd be better to settle for 19" or go
flatpanel.

right click your desktop and goto properties and then settings. You can set the screen res there.

Yes it works quite well if you are sitting close to the screen, just as good
as a bigger monitor
really. I think I will keep it like this.
