Hello from a frequent lurker. I would like to thank everyone here for the helpful tips and links you all provide. I've personally learned about and acquired some nifty programs due to reading this newsgroup.

I've been browsing computer stores and notice most of them have a program installed called BigFix. I Googled BigFix and found http://www.bigfix.com/website/download.html
the program appears to be free. Wonder if any of you good folks have any first hand knowledge about it.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I noticed that this program came on my friend's new computer. What it
does mostly is to download Microsoft's patches when they're not
present. And as far as that goes, from this site

http://www.hevanet.com/peace/microsoft.htm

the following:

"Microsoft has a history of using defect fixes and security fixes to
change the operating system settings. This means that all the settings
would need to be checked after every defect fix or security
vulnerability fix."

Personally, I don't download or use Microsoft patches anymore, but I'm
using ME, not XP so I don't have as many security concerns.

Right! That would really be asking for it. Rule of thumb, if it ain't broke,
don't fix it.

Many people don't realize that some patches don't affect them. I've rescued
2 people in 2 weeks that had big problems from patching XP with patches they
didn't even need. The only patch I highly recommend is the Blaster Worm
vulnerability patch.

I downloaded it, looked at it a few seconds, and decided not to install it.
My intuition told me it was junk, and not worth the effort.

Perhaps it could be useful to a raw computer novice. Perhaps!

It has been around for years, and used to be great - looked for and
alerted you to driver updates, software updates as well as OS updates.

Sounds more limited now - I tried it 6 months ago, and the "fixlets" -
the sites which can search for you, were very limited even then.

Mind you some comments on the above link were a little unfair - one
person gave Bigfix a big thumbs down - his reason.....

"Haven't had time to try it yet" :-) no time to try it, yet time to
post a comment - what gives....... :-)

cheers

Thanks for all the comments about BigFix, helps to know what saavy folks
think about a product.

I appologize for forgetting to turn my 'plain text' option back on. Opps.
Hope you all forgive me.

Bigfix is old stuff but still works fine.
I stull use it on my WinME machine and it still does a good job. Never
had any complaints about it... suppose that you can install i without
any frear! Do see if it supports your OS..
But I do not have the feeling that it has been upgraded for many
years.

does lotsa more than just MS patches,... but you need to "subsribe" to
your preferred category

You do not actually "subscribe" as in giving your personal details or
the like. There are a number of "fixlet" sites, and all you do is
pick the relevant sites for your type of PC or software (as in
Windows '98, NT etc). That way you don't finish up downloading fixes
that are not for your system.
