If you do it yourself, I have a bit of experience with
installations up to 10TB or so. Best approach for us was
to get 19" cases with a lot of SATA hot-swap enclosures.
We use 8 slot cases, since we also do a lot of computing,
but 12 Slot and 16 Slot are also possible. Get a RAID6
controller for each, put Linux in the box and get around
14TB per box (using 16 x 1TB drives). For controller I would
recommend 3ware, since they have native Linux support.
If speed and hot-swappability is not an issue you can
also use non-raid controllers and software RAID6.
Partition as needed and export with NFS over GbE.
This gives you something like 60% disk price and
40% overhead for the rest (not including electricity and
server room). The numbers will likely have changed again
and depend on the details. But if you buy something pre-made,
you typically pay 3-5 times the disk price, which is unreasonable
IMO.
Best also factor in two (!) competent (!) people to maintain
the installation.
