Big Security Problems

Hi,

Since I installed Windows XP a few days ago I have had big security
problems. This could be linked to potential spyware that I downloaded when
still operating under Windows ME - a supposed Spyware detector that "scanned"
my computer and then wouldn't let off without me purchasing it, flashing on
my screen etc. I was forced to delete whatever I could find of it - I think
it was called PC Doctor.

However, since I installed Windows XP, firstly, strange messages started
coming up onto the screen requesting me to connect to the Internet so that I
could connect to a certain website.

Then, more strange messages started coming through "Windows Messenger"
telling me to download software from Win-Fix.com as I had been infected with
SpyWare.

I have noticed recently that my internet has been considerably slowed, and
that my internet connection is SENDING information faster than it is
receiving; it is sending at about 5kb/s even though I am not transferring
files of any kind. I am sure that it has connected to some site and is
transmitting personal details.

I've already used one piece of anti-spy software, SpyDoctor, and it deleted
many files but didn't help with the core problem. I'm currently downloading
AVG anti-virus now.

I've looked at the task manager to try and figure out what programs running
might be causing the problem - the only things that look suspicious are
multiple versions of SVCHOST.exe.

PLEASE HELP! I am DESPERATE to fix this problem but I don't know how!

Go to Lavasoft's website, DL, install and run Ad-Aware SE Personal. It is
free for personal use. http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

Go to Spybot S&D's website, DL, install and run Spybot Search & Destroy.
http://safer-networking.org/en/index.html

If you run these frequently you can keep your computer "clean" of problems.
Spybot can be setup to run all the time. The free Ad-Aware version will only
run when you start it up, I think that their paid version offers more
capability to run all the time.

Hi,

I suggest you get rid of windows Messenger. Its a 3 step
process though. One you uninstall it from Add/remove
programs in windows componets.
Next go to the windows folder, (in folder options>view
choose `show hidden folder`) go to the inf folder, find
the sysoc.inf file, double click on it and find a line
that has msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7.
Delete the hide only, leave the commas.

Go back to add/remove programs>windows componets, you`ll
see the windows messenger there twice, uncheck the new one
and install. That will remove the program completely,
then in programs files, delete the messenger folder.

Then I suggest as the others wrote, install the freeware
spyware remover tools. You might also think about
PestPatrol, its not free, but powerful.

Don`t think just installing one spyware detector program
is enough. I have 4 running on my system, Spyguard,
spyblaster, Spybot search and destroy, and last
PestPatrol.

I know its sad to have 4 of these running at one time, but
unfortunately, just one program is not enough.
