big problems after XP Home reinstall

i was running a preinstalled XP Media Center but after various probs
(including preinstalled recovery software failing) i decided to reinstall
using my XP Home full edition.
installed ok but my sound card was not found and my tft monitor not
recognised.
ive tried to download the driver (at least i think the correct driver based
on info from pc retailer) for my card - still not recognised. Its a C-Media
9739A AC'97 and ive downloaded the Realtex ac97 drivers to no avail.

Also, my monitor, a proview tft monitor - ive found the ICC profiles and
downloaded them. But when i go into display under control panel and try to
change monitor its only got 'default' monitor under monitor type and the
properties button is shaded so cant change. Under adapter its got VgaSave
and device type is non-plug and play drivers. Any ideas how i can change
this?

please can someone help! im just out my warranty so my retailer wont help
and dont know what the heck to do!!!!

you best source of drivers
updates, patches and faq's
specific to your computer
should be found on the
manufacturer's website.

however, based on your posting,
i think one fatal error may be
installing a previously activated
windows o.s. on top of another
activated windows that came
preinstalled....

what is you computer make
and model?

Your Recovery Disks may have failed because you have hardware issues.
Since you didn't say what the "various probs [sic]" were, I can't tell
for certain. In any case, you will need to get the drivers for all the
hardware in your machine from whatever source the computer came from.
IOW, if this is an HP or an eMachine, you'll need to get the drivers
from them. If this is a generic/local shop built machine, then run one
of these system inventory programs to find out what hardware is in the
computer:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

Once you've identified the hardware, get drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

it was bought thru PC World in the UK. Ive found the sound card drivers from
the PC World website. For the model I have, the video card driver is
mentioned but when ive downloaded this its not found (I think i purchased it
with a special upgraded video card at the time!). It doesnt mention the
monitor at all. My worry is why it cant detect a monitor (although it does
work just very slow in scrolling).

With regard to the problems I was having - it started off stupid - shockwave
wouldnt install on download due to permissions. I was on here, and Macromedia
support and found a fix on Macromedia which meant altering permissions on the
root part of the registry. When i rebooted it wouldnt load - got as far as
my wallpaper with nothing else - explorer.exe or icons wouldnt load -so i
used safety mode and used the recovery feature but on boot-up after the
'booting from cd' part it came up *trypdll (sic) (not sure of first part of
dll name) is compressed - press Ctl ALt Del - which just went round in a
circle. hence the reinstall. just need video card and monitor fixed now!
Belarc doesnt detect display at all....

thanks for help so far tho

You need drivers for:

1. The motherboard (chipset), which you would probably get from PC World.
2. The audio drivers - you've already gotten.
3. The video drivers from whatever company made the card - ATI or Nvidia
probably.
4. You don't need monitor drivers - the reason your scrolling is wonky
is that you don't have the correct video drivers installed.

If you still can't figure out your video card, here are options:

1. Look at your purchase papers to see what you bought.
2. Call up PC World to find out what you bought.
3. Open the computer and - with it unplugged - take out the video card
and look at it.
4. Take the machine to a local professional and have them sort you out.
This will not be a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

its an advent t9207.
ive found a sound driver which works and the correct nvidia card for the
video/monitor.
why could installing a clean version of xp home over a preinstalled xp media
centre be such a fatal error?
would it make things worse updgrading to vista in the near future or would
that compound any errors?
cheers

It isn't the upgrade per se but rather that when you install any
operating system you need to provide drivers for all the hardware. It
doesn't matter what operating system is used; you need the correct
drivers or the operating system can't use the hardware. For example, the
OS may recognize that you have a sound card installed, but you won't
have any sound until you install the correct drivers.

As for upgrading to Vista, be very sure your computer can handle that
operating system. Vista is far more demanding of the hardware than XP
is. You will need Vista drivers for all your hardware and if the
hardware mftrs. didn't write them and/or don't plan to write them, that
hardware won't work in Vista.

Do the research about Vista compatibility about your hardware and your
programs first. The Vista Upgrade Advisor is OK but it is not infalliable.

If everything is working, leave it alone. Glad you got it sorted. Thanks
for taking the time to post back.

<snip>

It's a good rule to never upgrade an OS that has problems. That generally
just makes matters worse. Things are different, somewhat, in upgrading to
Vista. The upgrade install does not replace files, it lays down Vista as an
image so an upgrade is clean for the OS, so it won't carry over XP OS
problems, but the difficulty comes in migrating the installed apps and
hardware.

With Vista I recommend you do a clean install of the OS, then install the
apps clean. But before moving to Vista, do some research. Running the
upgrade advisor is a start, but that only gives you an indication of issues.
It is not a guarantee or always complete or accurate.

Research all the hardware to see if there are Vista drivers available. Same
with the software. Some legacy software will run on Vista no problems, some
will with using compatibility mode, and some just won't work.

There are Vista specific newsgroups. Here's a list.

microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

Best to install the OS you want to use totally fresh.
