Hi,
One month ago I installed the KB823980 update, which at
that time was not a critical but a recommended update (OS:
Windows 2000, SP4). After the PC was rebooted, no way to
run Windows normally! no more icons on the desktop, no
more taskbar, not even when rebooting in safe mode!
After many searches, I finally solved the problem by
booting with a Windows 98 diskette and replacing the 3 new
files by the 3 old ones.
Three days ago, not aware it was the same patch, I ran it
again as recommended by Microsoft, and same consequences!
I scanned thoroughly my system with MCAfee utility
(Stinger) and no trace of the Blaster worm (happily I had
already blocked the suspicious ports to avoid webpopups).
No trace either of the worm in the task manager or in the
registry.
Microsoft support seems unable to help me - what should I
do to patch the vulnerability without making my system
unusable?
I seee nothing about my problem in KB articles...
Thanks in advance for any help.
