Problem: Can login to the Dell X300 laptops with the Local Machine Domain.
Cannot login to the Network Domain after having added the machine to the
Network Domain successfully.

Info: Message returns that there is no Domain Server available to
authenticate.

When I login to the Local Machine, I can then access Domain Server resources
but cannot access any network shares without login to Network Domain when
prompted. Have a network that I am trying to install two new Dell X300
Laptops onto. I have them recognizing the Cisco 1100 WAP without issue.
They currently have 4 other notebooks on the same network without issue. I
can ping all network components without problem.

Question: Why can I not login to the Network Domain directly?

Thanks for the help!!

The fact that you located the DNS newsgroup to post your question tells me
that you have an idea what the problem is.

It is more than likely a DNS issue, so could you tell us about your DNS
configuration. In particular, compare the output of "ipconfig /all" between
the machines that work and those that don't.

Are you using DHCP to configure all your DNS settings? Perhaps the X300s
are connected in such a way that they use a different DHCP server and get
different IP settings to the machines that work properly.

If you're still stuck, post back the output from "ipconfig /all" and we can
take a look.

Thank you for your response. The ipconfig /all between the different
machines reads the same.

One primary difference is that in going into the DNS Server settings on
the Server, it does not list the X300s. I tried the regdns command and that
didn't seem to have any effect either. I am truly stumped. They do have
DHCP active but, all the systems are assigned Static IPs. (I have inherited
quite a few rather odd setups from a previous employee, and have been able
to correct any incorrect settings to this point.)

I am also having another login issue with one of the X300s. It is now not
recognizing any user names or passwords and will not allow me to login
locally?... What the heck is up with that? I've tried reinstalling the OS
but it fails saying the destination is not accessible. Do you know of a
Newsgroup that I may get help with that issue as well?

Thanks for the help!
It is much appreciated.

There's a couple things required for regsitration to occur:

1. The Primary DNS Suffix has to match the AD DNS domain name.
2. ONLY use the internal DNS servers in IP properties.
3. The checkbox under DNS tab in Ip properties, advanced, must be set to
'register this connection.

If you can possibly post an ipconfig of a working machine and one of the
laptops, maybe that will help us determine this.

As far as not being able to login the local machine,. I assume you are
selecting the local machine's name in the dropdown box?

After you reinstalled the laptop, Where or what is telling you "destination
is not accessible"?
