If you formatted C: and not D: as you say, your files and folders are still
on the D: drive.

If you did something more than what you've told us and the files are gone,
you may be able to get them back. There are companies that specialize in
recovering data (see your local phone book) and there are recovery programs
such as these two:
Restorer2000 http://www.bitmart.net
RStudio http://www.r-tt.com

NOTE: Use the drive as little as possible until recovery is attempted.
Using it can cause the files you're seeking to be overwritten.

If Drive C:\ was formatted in NTFS then MS-DOS cannot not see the C:\
therefore making the D:\ into C:\.

Hi, EFI.

Kamal probably has the clue to your problem:

MS-DOS and Windows versions built on that foundation (Win9x/ME) cannot read
from, write to or even SEE an NTFS volume. Therefore, when you booted from
an MS-DOS boot floppy and ran Format.exe (an MS-DOS program), it did not see
your NTFS-formatted Drive C: and formatted what it THOUGHT was C: - but was
really your FAT-formatted Drive D:.

It's too late for this time, but THROW AWAY that MS-DOS startup disk! Or at
least hide it so that you won't be tempted to use it ever again. The proper
way to format Drive C: and reinstall WinXP is to boot from the WinXP CD-ROM
and let Setup partition (if you like) and reformat for you. To format any
volumes other than C: (and your boot volume, if different), use Disk
Management from inside WinXP.

As Sharon says, your only hope may be one of the recovery companies or a
heavy-duty utility. (R-Studio has saved my "lost" file a couple of times.)
Only YOU can decide if your files are worth the cost.

And, please, find the CAPS LOCK key and use it to stop SHOUTING at us.
